Hostel/Hotel Recommendations

Hostel recommendations

A great trip is as much about where you’re staying as where you’re going. Fortunately Thailand has some awesome places to stay even if you’re on a budget. Below are some recommended hostels (I’ve stayed in most of these, with a couple of recommendations from friends thrown in):

Suneta Hostel Khaosan Bangkok Modern yet cozy hostel, away from busy Khaosan Road but close enough to walk there. Lovely common room with several pet guinea pigs.
Yard Hostel Bangkok In a less touristy part of Bangkok, its courtyard garden is a rare escape from the city noise. Read about my stay at Yard Hostel.
Chill Out House Koh Lanta Amazing (though very basic) hostel made out of driftwood and other recycled materials. Very communal atmosphere on Koh Lanta’s backpacker beach.
Shiralea Backpackers Resort Koh Phangang There’s party hostels aplenty on Koh Phangang. This one is further away from the Full Moon Party, and has more of a mix of party and relaxing.
Baan Rub Aroon Chiang Rai Relaxing hostel in a mansion-like building a little away from the noisy streets downtown.
Taco Shack Hostel Koh Tao The highest-rated hostel on Koh Tao.
Spicy Pai Pai Basic bamboo hut hostel amongst the rice fields, just outside of Pai. Social party atmosphere.
Green Tulip House Chiang Mai Colorful Chiang Mai hostel with a great atmosphere and rooftop lounge.

Budget hotels & bungalows

There is lots of excellent value accommodation in Thailand. If you look around a bit, you can find guesthouses and hotels with nice modern rooms, AC and swimming pool for under $35/night. (Do keep in mind that prices depend on season.)

I like using Booking.com as it’s the best site for finding independent (non-chain) hotels. I have linked some examples below of great value accommodation based on price and rating:

Guesthouse DD Hut Koh Tao Mini-resort with modern bungalows right on Sairee Beach, with private balconies and sea views. $33/n
The Earth House Koh Tao Thai-style bamboo bungalows among the palm trees with cozy beer garden. $12/n.
Dream Valley Resort Railay (Krabi) Bungalow starting at $35/n and 1 minute walk from the beach
High Life Bungalow Koh Phangang Mini-resort on top off a cliff overlooking the beach with hammocks, swimming pool & sea views. Starting at $24/n.
Thai Garden Hill Resort Koh Chang Modern bungalows with AC around a central pool. $35/n for a standard double.
Rainforest Boutique Hotel Chiang Mai Chiang Mai has possibly the largest offering of budget to mid-range accommodation. Here’s one great example but there are hundreds more.
Khao Sok Palm Garden Resort Khao Sok National Park There’s a lot of affordable jungle hut style accommodation in beautiful Khao Sok National Park. Another example is Monkey Mansion.
